I posted this as an answer to another thread, but I thought it might be nice for some folks to have it up as its own post. One of our members, Rich, was curious:
how are you able to put part of a post into its own little box when replying?
See those little boxes at the bottom of each post that say "EDIT" "REPLY" "QUOTE" "QUICKREPLY" (etc..)?
Click (making sure you're on the post that has the text you want) on QUOTE.
It shows up on the board just like the top of this very post! You can chose out of the entire posting which text you want in your quote box.. and generally when you are taking out a large portion of someone else's post it's nice to put up (snip) so those reading know you're addressing something in particular. You can always preview the post by clicking the "Preview Reply" (to the right of "Submit") to see how it looks.
In the post it's as simple as a little BB (bulletin board) Coding: [*quote*] and [*/quote*]
(remove the stars)
You can use that coding to quote any one/thing if you wanted!
Say you wanted to highlight a part of a book or an article, or as I just did in another post, a forwarded message -- just put quote in brackets before the text and /quote in brackets after the text is finished.
You can put the quote anywhere you want and have text before and after it.
Do you guys know much about BB Code?
Firstly, there's a nice and easy guide here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBCode
But you can also learn about it within this site. When you go to post a New Topic, on the top of where you type are a whole bunch of lil buttons -- "B" "I" "U" etc.. those are lots of ways to put emPHAsis on your postings, and can teach you bb code.
[*b*] and [*/b*] would bold the "and" if I removed the stars. Most of HTMLs codes are the same for bulletin boards (most, not all.. ie URL links) the only main difference is that instead of using carrots < > you use brackets [ ]
(There is an explanation of HTML or DHTML in that wiki page, as well to see the two codes side by side.. but remember, in LymeCommunity.com you use bb coding.)
You can:
- post in all sorts of colours
- align your text in the center or to the right/left
- put in a link to someone's email
- make a bulleted list (what I'm doing right now)
- use smilies.. (there's a sampling of the smilies on the 'post a new topic' page, too -- look on top or just click on the button that has the
on it for a few different choices) - put images up
- bold, italicise or underline text
I hope this helps some people -- we can do all sorts of things with our posts here to help make things clear for people.
