I seem to live in a very tick infested area--lots of friends are getting bit by both deer and wood ticks--is there anything that keeps them from biting? I just took a deer tick off but I am currently on Doxycycline--but how do I not keep getting bit???!!!! I live in a very rural area and every where I walk are deer/woods/ or grass--I can't not walk--I'll stiffen up and be bedridden!! Also if someone had a deer tick for over a few hours should they automatically take antibiotics and not wait for symptoms? Zaviyth

DEET is the only thing I know of that will make you less tasty. The ticks are still able to bite you if they are hungry enough, plus you are putting a poison on your skin. I'm sure someone here will know of some natural ways to protect yourself.

I would suggest to my friends to take 200mg, twice a day of Doxycycline (400mg/day total) after any tick bite for at least 6 weeks. If the ticks don't have lyme, they still might have other co-infections and parasites. Doxy seems the best abx to attack most of these things. It's best to get it soon while it can kill "the bugs" in the blood. The longer you wait, the more likely "the bugs" will get into the tissues and the harder it is to kill with antibiotics. The hard part is to convince your friends to do that and they need to convince a doctor to make out the prescription.

Good luck with your friends and take care,
Rich (skiweasel7)

Thanks for the info. I think I need to start Doxy in march and end in December. I have been bitten 3 times already (that I know Of EEEK) and am going for a lyme test AGAIN tomorrow. I beginning to think of wearing tick collars on,my ankles!
