I recently read Stephen Harrod Buhner's book Herbal Antibiotics and found it very interesting. It's a fairly short book and an easy read.

He talks about how certain plants have antibiotic qualities - like aloe, garlic, grapefruit seed extract - and even tells which bugs they work best on. He explains how herbs are composed of thousands of substances and how difficult it is for a bacteria to develop resistance to such complex substances as herbs.

Some of the herbs in his list of the top 15 antibiotic herbs are: acacia, aloe, cryptolepis (which he now recommends for babesia), echinacea, garlic, ginger, grapefruit seed extract, raw honey, and sage.

He does not talk about Lyme specifically in this book but some of the herbs in his book Healing Lyme are mentioned for their immune boosting qualities (ie Red Root, Boneset).

I ordered a whole bunch of his books and am enjoying every single one. I love his approach. He answers questions about his Lyme protocol on my website Planet Thrive, for those who are interested: Healing Lyme with Herbs.

In addition to the well-known antibiotic herbs garlic, ginseng, Brazilian basil, Echinacea, and rosmarinus, the formulation incorporates concentrated berberis alkaloid extract, camellia sinensis extract (containing 50% polyphenols), and usnea barbata for its phyto-chemicals that support and assist the immune system in fighting coughs and inflammation.

Today, drug resistant germs are spreading at an alarming rate. Natural herbal antibiotics support a healthy immune system. It is the immune system that plays a major role in determining whether the body will effectively fight off infection and maintain immunity against pathogenic bacteria and viruses.
