The creation of The Fluoride Myth is said to be the first professional modern public relations triumph. It implanted the use of fluoride in our water and in our toothpaste in the name of health. However, the Myth is slowly being overturned by the sheer force of truth.
On November 9, 2006 the American Dental Association (ADA) released an email alert to its members warning that fluoridated water should not be mixed into formula or foods intended for babies aged 1 and younger.
This is a major admission for an association that has long promoted a toxic substance which is actually an industrial waste and linked to central nervous system effects, arthritis, osteoporosis, thyroid disorders, Alzheimer's, cancer, and decreased intelligence.
Fluoridated bottled water is available in grocery stores with instructions to mix it into baby formula, which is what prompted the ADA to warn its members: "Infants could receive a greater than optimal amount of fluoride through liquid concentrate or powdered baby formula that has been mixed with water containing fluoride during a time that their developing teeth may be susceptible to enamel fluorosis."
Paul Beeber, lawyer and New York State Coalition Opposed to Fluoridation (NYSCOF) president, noted that NYSCOF gave the ADA in 2000 and 2004 studies that linked fluorisis to infant foods mixed with fluoridated water. However, Beeber remarked, it took the ADA until 2006 to release its alert, right after the FDA disapproved of marketing fluoridated water to babies in October and the National Research Council reported that babies are fluoride overdosed from "optimally" fluoridated water supplies.
Beeber said, "The NRC also revealed fluoridation's adverse effects to the thyroid gland, diabetics, kidney patients, high water drinkers and others."
He added that the ADA warning had only gone out to its members, and asked, "Who will alert parents?"
There is a dark history to the use of fluoride recently documented in a book by Christopher Bryson titled, “The Fluoride Deception.” Bryson writes,
“Fluoride lies at the elemental core of some of the greatest fortunes the world has ever seen, the almost unimaginable wealth of the Mellons of Pittsburgh and the Du Ponts of Delaware. And no wonder the warning on the toothpaste tube is so dramatic. The same potent chemical used to enrich uranium, to prepare Sarin nerve gas and to wrestle molten steel and aluminum from the earth’s core is what we give to our children first thing in the morning and last thing at night…”
Fluoride is thought to suppress intelligence and independent thinking, and there were plans during WWII to medicate populations with it by putting it in water systems.
Fluoride was one of the most common pollutants to emerge from America's industrial revolution. At first, it was sold as an insecticide and rat poison. But there were tons of it to dispose of. Then came a questionable study, funded by one of the nation's biggest aluminum manufacturers, that fluoride could reduce cavities. Immediately, every fluoride-producing industry began heavily promoting fluoridation for cavities.
Sodium fluoride was sold before FDA safety and effectiveness testing laws were enacted in 1938 and 1962, respectively. So fluoride was exempt from scrutiny, or “grandfathered in,” without any FDA human or animal studies.
Today, two-thirds of the U.S. public water supply has fluoride chemicals added, even though the theory has been disproved that fluoride ingestion prevents cavities. In a letter to Congress last year, EPA employee unions asked for the government to put an end to the practice of fluoridated water. They also want the EPA to officially recognize that fluoride can cause cancer—and to set the drinking water standard for fluoride at zero.
Over the years at least 12 Nobel Prize winners in Medicine and Chemistry have warned of the associated health risks. "Fluoridation ... is the greatest fraud that has ever been perpetrated and it has been perpetrated on more people than any other fraud has," said Professor Albert Schatz, Ph.D. (Microbiology), Nobel Prize Winner and Discoverer of streptomycin.
Dr. Phyllis Mullenix of Harvard University's Forsyth Research Institute (a dental research institute) published a study pointing out that fluoride was more effective than lead in reducing IQ levels in children.
In addition to drinking water and toothpaste, fluoride is found in food because fluoridated water is used in processing. Because of fluoride pesticide residues, virtually all processed foods and beverages have a fluoride content – soda, candy, french fries, grape juice and some chicken products. “Americans are actually over-fluoridated now; and should avoid fluoridated water – whether from the tap or the bottle, in our opinion,” says NYSCOF’s Beeber.
What can you do? Limit your exposure. Avoid processed foods. Filter the water in your home – chlorine and fluoride have both been shown to cause cancer. And the easiest way of all is to buy toothpaste that does not contain fluoride. There are many options for fluoride free toothpaste. Find one your family enjoys. The best defense against cavities is to avoid sugars and processed foods, floss, and rinse with a mouthwash that is one part 3% hydrogen peroxide (typical drug store variety) and 10 parts filtered water; add a drop of peppermint essential oil for a mint taste.
